Hyperthermia refers to the elevation of tumour temperature, and is routinely used in combination with radiation and chemotherapy at some oncology centres. Hyperthermia can be classified as mild (temperature elevation to 37.5 to 38.5 degrees Celsius), moderate (38.5 to 40 degrees Celsius) and extreme (over 40 degrees Celsius). Classically, it was thought that only extreme hyperthermia had anti-cancer effects, but more modern research suggests that mild hyperthermia has optimal tumour cell killing properties.
